Choosing a career can be an easy task for some students, while for other students, the task can seem overwhelming. No matter which perspective a student may take towards career decisions, the Advisement and Counseling Center is an invaluable resource for any student needing career information and exploration. Counselors collaborate with students in their career decision-making process, and may help them assess their career interests and values, select a program of study as it relates to a career, and research specific careers and their outlook in the workforce. There are numerous tools that counselors may employ when working with students regarding career and may include:
- DISCOVER Career Guidance Software
- Career Assessments & Inventories
- Career Library
- Career-related Websites
At Massasoit, there are more than 60 programs of study (majors) offered with over 800 different courses to select from each year. With so many options available, the Advisement and Counseling Center can help students navigate which programs and courses to choose in order to meet their educational and career goals. From the student's initial orientation right through graduation,
the center provides assistance on such topics as:
- Program of Study Selection
- Course Selection/Sequencing
- Course Load
- Change of Program Process
Students interested in changing their program of study initiate the process in the Advisement and Counseling Center. Required paperwork is filled out during an interview with a counselor and career counseling is provided if necessary. All completed requests for change of program are filed with the Registrar's Office except for “Selective Admission” programs. Applications to these programs are submitted to the Admissions Office and may have a deadline.
Many students take advantage of Massasoit's affordable tuition and high quality education to begin their college careers. Massasoit's transfer programs, Business Administration Transfer, Human Services Transfer, Criminal Justice Transfer, Liberal Arts Transfer-Science and Liberal Arts Transfer allow you to complete the first two years of your four-year degree. |

Do You Have Questions About
Transferring To A 4-Year College?

The Commonwealth Transfer Compact facilitates transfer of Massasoit graduates to junior status into Massachusetts state colleges and universities. The compact provides that Massasoit transfer programs will be transferred as a unit (provided the student meets the admission criteria at the four-year school) and will be applied toward a Bachelor's degree. Students are eligible for the Transfer Compact by meeting the following criteria:
-
Complete an Associate Degree with a minimum of 60 credit hours exclusive of developmental coursework
-
Achieve a cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.0 (in a 4.0 system) at the community college awarding the degree
-
Complete the following minimum general education courses, exclusive of developmental coursework:
| English Composition/Writing |
6 credit hours |
| Behavioral and Social Science |
9 credit hours |
| Humanities and Fine Arts |
9 credit hours |
| Natural or Physical Sciences |
8 credit hours |
| Mathematics |
3 credit hours |
| Total |
35 credit hours |
The five Massasoit programs which fulfill the Compact are Business Administration Transfer, Human Services Transfer, Criminal Justice Transfer, Liberal Arts Transfer, and Liberal Arts Transfer/Science. Students interested in the Massachusetts Transfer Compact should also become familiar with the Joint Admission program.
Points of Clarification for the Compact
- Students must graduate from a designated transfer program to receive Compact status.
- All transfer Compact requirements must be fulfilled prior to enrolling at the four-year institution.
- State College and University Registrars have the right to require two full years of upper division coursework and the right to require major course requirements for the Bachelor's degree.
- A grade of "D" can be accepted toward a Bachelor's degree but a "D" will only be applied towards major credit if a native student can use the "D" toward major credit.
- The Transfer Compact does not guarantee admission to a State College or University.

College can be an exciting time that offers its students tremendous opportunities for individual and intellectual growth. However, there may be occasions where students experience some difficulties during their college career that can interfere with meeting their educational goals. The Advisement and Counseling Center is a valuable resource that can assist students with issues that impact their personal well-being. Some of these issues may include:
- Anxiety
- Attention / Concentration Deficits
- Depression
- Relationship Problems
- Substance Abuse
- Sexuality / Sexual Orientation
- Stress Management
Counselors can help students explore how to best address these and other personal concerns which may include a referral to professionals in the community for more extensive services. Information shared by students in their appointments with counselors is considered confidential and will not be disclosed to others except in very specific circumstances (which can be discussed between counselors and students).
The Advisement and Counseling Center can also provide crisis intervention services and consultations to college faculty and staff. Students who are experiencing a crisis on campus should meet with a counselor for assistance. For faculty and staff that have serious concerns about students' emotional and behavioral well-being, counselors can offer strategies that may benefit both faculty/staff and students. |
