Transfer Planning and Campus Visits
Preparing for a smooth transition into a 4-year college or university will require some research and planning on your part. It is never too early to begin thinking about your transfer options. We provide free visits to major in-state institutions so that you have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Admissions, Housing, Financial Aid, other TRIO programs like PLAN and specific departments.

It is important to begin early planning of your next steps beyond Massasoit Community College . Most colleges and universities provide detailed information regarding transfer to students over the Web. Additional resources are available online and in printed form in the Academic Advising Center.
Completing a college degree is a unique experience for each student. For best results, plan according to the requirements for your major at your intended transfer institution. Although selecting the appropriate courses is your responsibility, there are many resources available to help you.
Regardless of where you are in the major decision-making process, here are some basic tips that can help as you progress toward completion of your degree.
First Semester or Completion of 15 Credit Hours
- Complete College Experience course. This course is designed to help you make a successful transition to the college environment and develop the skills and strategies necessary for success in college.
- Contact an academic advisor if you still have questions about your educational plan.
- Learn the specific requirements for the various Associates degree programs. They are available online and in the college catalog.
- Begin completing general education courses appropriate for your major.
- If you are undecided about your major, take advantage of the many resources available to help you in the PLAN, Academic Advising and Career Services Offices, including:
- Transfer planning information
- Individual career testing and counseling
- Career Planning seminars and workshops
- Numerous online career-planning resources
- Learn about college resources and publications. Numerous printed materials are available on campus.
- If you are transferring courses to Massasoit Community College from another college, be sure to submit official transcripts to the Admissions Office.
- Explore requirements/opportunities for your intended major at different transfer institutions. Be aware that some colleges and universities don't offer all majors. Some, like architecture or veterinary medicine, are offered at very few universities throughout the United States . Take advantage of the many resources available to help you with your exploration, including:
- Individual academic advising
- Educational planning sessions
- Numerous online educational-planning resources
- Attend transfer fairs held each year. At these fairs, representatives from four-year colleges and universities are available to answer your questions.
- Have fun! Get involved in campus activities. Get to know your instructors and other students on campus.
Second Semester or Completion of 15-30 Credit Hours
- If you haven't already done so, select a major.
- Select institutions that you are interested in transferring.
- Visit your intended transfer institution and talk with both a transfer admissions representative and an advisor for your intended program of study. Your PLAN advisor can arrange a visit for you. It's important to "get a feel" for the campus and make sure that it is where you want to be.
- Meet with the representative from your intended transfer institution if they visit Massasoit Community College .
- Refine your educational plan so that it is specific to your major at your intended transfer institution. Know both the admission and graduation requirements.
- Consider developing an alternate plan in case your first-choice transfer institution doesn't work out.
- Evaluate first-semester academic performance and seek assistance in areas where you need additional help.
- Have more fun! Meet more students. Try to meet someone who will be transferring to the same four-year university as you!
Third Semester of Completion of 30-45 Credit Hours
- Submit applications to the four-year colleges of your choice.
- Meet with the representative from your intended transfer institution if they visit Massasoit Community College .
- Explore student-housing options if applicable.
- Find out about scholarships and financial aid for the four-year college. Many four-year colleges offer scholarships specifically for transfer students.
- Visit the four-year college campuses to begin preparing for your transition to the new college.
- Review your program completion status with an academic advisor. Ask for an academic progress report showing what courses you have completed and what courses you still have ahead of you!
Fourth Semester or Completion of 45 Hours or More
- Petition to graduate EARLY in the semester. Deadlines are identified in the semester class schedule.
- Send your Massasoit Community College transcript and transcripts from any other colleges you attended. Be sure to check the requirements of your intended transfer institution.
- Meet with the representative from your intended transfer institution if they visit Massasoit Community College to make sure you are set to go!
- Visit the four-year college campus to begin preparing for your transition to the new college.
- Be sure to participate in an open house and transfer student orientation sessions at your selected four-year university. Even though you will be an experienced college student at this point, there still will be many things you will need to learn about your new college campus.
- CELEBRATE your success at Massasoit Community College Community College. Know that Massasoit Community College has prepared you well to continue your success at the four-year college.
Transfer Planning is a Continuous Process
Attend Transfer Fairs, Information Tables, Workshops offered on MCC campus.
Keep your grades competitive as set by the program and four-year you have chosen.
Are your interests unchanged? Are you be re-thinking a career direction?
Has transfer information changed?
Ask questions: admission requirements, best time to apply, application deadlines.
Keep your all your course syllabi. Occasionally, students need to submit a syllabus for a course to be evaluated for transfer.
Advantages in earning an Associate Degree prior to Transferring
Completing a program of study and earning an Associate degree can ease transfer.
Many four-year institutions give preference to transfer students with an A.A. or A.S. Degree.
Freshman and sophomore years in smaller classes.
Teaching-oriented faculty, student-oriented services.
Lower tuition.
Obtain, Complete and Submit before Deadlines
Minimum Required: application, high school transcript, essay, transcripts (all colleges attended).
Maybe required: recommendations, references, personal interview.
Contact MCC Registrar's Office staff to request an official transcript be forwarded.
Students applying for financial aid need to submit separate applications and forms, generally the FAFSA (Federal/State Grant application ) and the four-year financial aid/scholarship application.
Be aware of both financial aid and admissions application deadlines.
Follow-Up
A transfer application takes from 4-8 weeks to process. Your application may be placed on hold waiting for final grades prior to a decision. Once accepted, give the Admissions office your decision quickly—and, before the deadline.
