| Brockton, MA (February 13, 2013) – The president of Massasoit Community College, Dr. Charles Wall, was presented with the first ever YouthBuild Coalition Visionary Award for Education at the 18th Annual YouthBuild Day at the Massachusetts State House on February 7.
The Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition Visionary Award was given to “visionaries” in three different areas – government, workforce, and education. The award for government was presented to Governor Deval Patrick and the award for workforce was presented to Tim Tudor, Union Partner.
YouthBuild Brockton and Massasoit have worked together since 1998. As a result of the partnership, YouthBuild Brockton students have been able to participate in Massasoit’s summer bridge program, earning up to 12 college credits before they complete their YouthBuild program.
During his presentation of the award to Dr. Wall, Mark Showan highlighted the president’s achievements in alliances that have resulted in progress for the college community. “In his pursuit of access and opportunities for students, Dr. Wall has forged many collaborations and partnerships with local and regional organizations, and has created innovative programming such as Weekend College, two evening nursing programs, and ‘Science Sundays’, said Mr. Showan. “The agreement has broken down barriers to success and allowed open communication between YouthBuild and the College. It is fair to say that without this partnership, many students would not have had the opportunity to experience college and all that it has to offer.”
“Coming up with creative ways to deliver higher education opportunities to students such as those involved in YouthBuild is something that the College will continue to do. I am very proud of the staff and faculty members who foster successful collaborations with YouthBuild Brockton, and am honored to receive the Visionary Award on behalf of the College,” said Dr. Wall.
The MA YouthBuild Coalition was formed in 1966 to provide strong advocacy and an effective voice statewide to support YouthBuild members and its programs. YouthBuild students are active advocates for their programs and are eager to share their experiences.
