|Brockton, MA - Massasoit Community College and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in Scituate, MA have a long history of collaboration, but this new program leads the way in inventive and creative programming designed to provide students, as well as the general public with learning options depending on their goal.
This spring, students can earn a Coastal New England Marine Sanctuary Certificate by enrolling in the entire series to earn a Stellwagen Bank Docent’s Certificate or PDP’s for teachers. Members of the local community may enroll into the noncredit option as a community education program. The other option is to enroll in the course for as a three credit science course meeting the requirements for the science elective in the career (LAS, Human services, business, culinary) as well as the LATS program at Massasoit Community College.
Each week expert lecturers will provide information on Stellwagen Bank’s geology, oceanography, water quality, marine technology, marine life, and ocean policy. Elaine Stewart, Massasoit’s Dean of Workforce Development and Community Education stated, “The speaker for each session’s topic is an expert presently working in that specific marine field, so not only is there experience and knowledge in the presentation, but passion and real-life experiences. This is exciting material! I know, because I’ve heard some of these lectures.” Whether you are interested in regional geology, oceanography, water quality, marine technology, marine life, or ocean policy, it’s all here!
