Jean B. Derenoncourt Named Student Trustee
|Dr. Charles Wall, president of Massasoit Community College, is pleased to announce that Brockton
resident Jean B. Derenoncourt has been elected student representative to the Massasoit Community
College Board of Trustees.
A student in the Liberal Arts Transfer program at Massasoit, Jean serves as the President of the Hearts
for Haiti student group and Public Relations Coordinator for the International Touch Club. He was elected
by his peers into the Student Senate this past spring, and is a Presidential Student Ambassador.
Additionally, he was chosen for the highly selective Governor’s Internship Program this spring, which he
served in Governor Deval Patrick’s Office of Constituent Services.
“In his time at Massasoit, Jean has shown himself to be an engaged and committed student who wants to
make a true impact on the College. He has demonstrated his ambition and drive to succeed in his studies,
and proven through his deep involvement that he truly cares about the Massasoit community,” said Dr.
Wall. “We are confident that Jean will bring the student voice and perspective to the Board’s deliberations,
and are happy to welcome him to the Board of Trustees.”
Mr. Derenoncourt, a resident of the City of Brockton, moved to the United States in 2010 from Haiti. Upon
arrival to this country, he spoke no English, prompting his sister, with whom he had recently reunited, to
bring him to the Brockton Public Library to learn the language. In 2012, after obtaining his GED at
Massasoit, Jean decided to enroll as a full-time student. “My sister went to Massasoit, and she brought me
there and showed me around. I took my GED at Massasoit, and it was because of the people I met that
day that [I was] persuaded to attend Massasoit,” said Jean.
As Student Trustee, Jean will represent the students of Massasoit as a full voting member of the Board of
Trustees. He was sworn in before the Board of Trustees meeting on August 13, 2014.
