| Mountains Beyond Mountains |
At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This magnificent book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer—brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti—blasts through convention to get results.

Bednet Fundraiser
On April 21, 2009, James Blandino, acting Director of Student life will sleep under a bednet in the Upper Lounge Brockton Campus to raise money for this PIH program.

Help save thousands of lives by joining with the nonprofit organization Partners In Health (PIH) to buy and distribute insecticide-treated bednets to those most at risk for contracting malaria. These bednets have been proven to be a cheap and effective way to protect against malaria and save lives. Each net costs only $5!
At PIH, has set a goal to raise the funds needed to buy 10,000 nets. This is an ambitious goal. But it can be achieved with our help. Please consider donating what you can to buy one, two, three, or more nets. THEN SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. As one Haitian proverb says, men anpil chay pa lou, or "many hands make the load lighter." Together we can save thousands of lives.

History of One Book, One College
At Massasoit
 |
A college should provide opportunities outside the classroom in which its constituents can discourse on various topics. The One Book, One College Program at Massasoit Community College was created as one such opportunity for cultural development. The program goals include an attempt to bring faculty, staff, students, and the community together to read and discuss one book.
A program committee, made up of faculty, staff, and students, selects a book from suggestions submitted by the college community. The committee then plans a series of events related to the chosen book; including reviews, presentations on facets of the book, local trips, games, etc. to encourage participation in reading and discussion.
The program, begun in 2006, is in its fourth semester. Events have included trips to the Emerald Necklace in Boston and Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth; presentations by native Wampanoag Anawon Weeden and Stonehill professor and historian Gary Hylander; special presentations by faculty members including Pat Faiella on Sherlock Holmes, a Thanksgiving cooking demonstration with Anthony Giuffre, and Pat Laidler on marketing in the nineteenth century; outreach activities including bicycle safety with the day care children and a performance by the senior orchestra; and book discussions with faculty, staff and students taking part.
Books we have selected and discussed are Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick, and, our current offering, Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. |
