This semester, the One Book, One College Program is
promoting the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, about the life
of Dr. Paul Farmer. In honor of Dr. Farmer’s quest to cure disease in poverty
ravaged countries, the One Book Program is offering a gift certificate to our
MCC bookstore for the best essay, short story, or poem that exemplifies his
mission of making a difference.
CONTEST REQUIREMENTS
Subject: Making
a difference in the world.
Format: Short
story, non-fiction essay, or poem.
CRITERIA FOR ENTRIES:
- Length of Manuscript:
Poem
– maximum of 1 page.
Short
Story – maximum of 3 pages.
Essay
– maximum of 3 pages.
- A maximum of 3 entries will be accepted from any individual.
- All entries must be typed/word processed, double-spaced, and
include the name and contact information of the entrant.
- Entries will only be accepted in electronic format,
submitted on floopy disc, flashdrive or by email to onebook@massasoit.mass.edu, to be
processed through turnitin.com (plagiarism software).
- A panel of faculty/staff readers will judge the submissions
on the following:
- Best exemplifies the subject matter – “making a
difference.”
- Expresses the subject creatively in short story, essay, or
poem.
- Writes clearly with few errors in grammar or spelling.
- All entries must be received by April 10, 2009 in the
Massasoit Libraries.
All contestants are encouraged to read their entries at the
March 13th or April 24th Poetry Reading in the Upper Lounge, Brockton Campus.
The winning entry will be submitted for publication in the
Massasoit Voice.
The winner will be announced on April 22, 2009 at noon in
the Upper Lounge, Brockton Campus.
The winner must present a valid Massasoit student ID to
claim the prize.

- Walk around campus, read the quotes, and write down the

- Unscramble the words to complete the statement below and

CRITERIA FOR ENTRIES:
- A maximum of 3 entries will be accepted from any individual.
- All entries must include the name and contact information of
the entrant.
- Entries will only be accepted on contest forms available in
the Brockton and Canton campus libraries
or by printing the online form.
- All entries must be received by April 10, 2009 in the
Massasoit Libraries.
- Students who correctly solve the scramble will be entered
into a drawing for a chance to win the prize.
The winner will be announced on April 22, 2009 at noon in
the Upper Lounge, Brockton Campus.
The winner must present a valid Massasoit student ID to claim
the prize.

Students are invited to submit logos for the One Book One College Program. The winning logo should blend together
Massasoit Community College and the concept of One Book uniting One College. See examples created for other

CRITERIA FOR ENTRIES
- Entry must be an original logo design.
- A maximum of 3 entries will be accepted from any individual.
- All entries must include the name and contact information of
the entrant.
- Entries will only be accepted in electronic format,
submitted on floppy disc, flashdrive or emailed to onebook@massasoit.mass.edu,
- A panel of Art Department faculty will select the three top
designs.
- All entries must be received by April 10, 2009 in the
Massasoit Libraries.
Final selection will be made by the One Book, One College
Committee.
The winning entry will be submitted for publication in the
Massasoit Voice.

These rules for all three contests are subject to change at
the discretion of the contest judges. All decisions are final. Contest
