Scholarship Descriptions

Alpha Kappa Upsilon Alumni Association of Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Purpose: To provide support and encouragement in furthering the academic, social and intellectual development of Phi Theta Kappa members in the continuation of their studies in a four-year program
Value: Varies.
Number of Awards: 2.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be enrolled as a full- or part-time student in either the day school or DCE who will graduate from Massasoit Community College by Spring. Student must be in good standing with Phi Theta Kappa, maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Application: Phi Theta Kappa members obtain applications in the Student Life Office, (508) 588-9100, ext. 1487.
Altrusa International Club of Plymouth County Scholarship
Purpose: To recognize and reward the achievement of a 4.0 GPA by CHOICES students.
Value: $250.
Number of Awards: 3.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must be CHOICES students in the first year of the program who have earned a 4.0 GPA at the completion of the Fall semester.
Application: No application is required. Candidates selected by the Director of Financial Aid.
Visual Arts Faculty Award
Purpose: This award is presented in recognition of outstanding artistic achievement in the practice and understanding of the basic principles of art and/or graphic design.
Value: $150 to $200.
Number of Awards: Varies.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be enrolled in the Visual Arts program. Selection based on quality of work, professional attitude, GPA, attendance.
Application: No application is required. Faculty of the Visual Arts Department will select eligible candidates.
Artist Union Award
Purpose: To assist a student enrolled in the Visual Arts program.
Value: $200.
Number of Awards: 1.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be enrolled in Visual Arts program. Candidate should be involved in school community service, be in good academic standing, and work well with others.
Application: No application is required. Faculty of the Visual Arts Department will select eligible candidates.

Bay State Gas: Fire Science Scholarship
Purpose: To assist Fire Science students at Massasoit Community College .
Value:  Minimum of $500.
Number of Awards: Maximum of 6.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be matriculated into the Fire Science program at Massasoit Community College, have completed at least 18 credits in the program, and have attained a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Recipients must enroll at Massasoit Community College in the subsequent semester in the Fire Science program (taking a least six credits).  Applicants must write one statement of need and future career plans (at least 200 words in length).
Application: Deadline is the third Thursday in April.

Bessie Tsaganis Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To provide a Massasoit student who exhibits financial need (as determined by the federal needs analysis formula) access to an education.
Value: Amount not to exceed tuition and fees.
Number of Awards: Varies.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be registered for classes at Massasoit Community College and must demonstrate financial need (as determined by the federal needs analysis formula) and therefore must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Application: Applicant must write a letter requesting scholarship and explaining financial hardship. Director of Financial Aid will select eligible candidates based on financial need.
Betty Lesser Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To provide financial support towards the education of a nursing student at Massasoit Community College who demonstrates strong clinical nursing skills, compassion and empathy, and a tireless desire to attend to patients’ needs.
Value: $300.
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be completing his or her first year of the Nursing program, be making satisfactory academic progress, and have at least 12 credits for courses applicable only to the Nursing program and taken at Massasoit Community College. Applicant must possess strong clinical nursing skills and demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to patient’s needs. Applicant must demonstrate an extenuating circumstance or situation that is causing hardship.
Application: Deadline is April 15; obtain in Nursing Department.
Bill Hammond "Super-fantastic" Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be given out annually to a student exhibiting the most school spirit.
Purpose: To acknowledge a student who has been involved in many aspects of the college and who truly loves and enriches the life
of others at the college.

CHOICES Scholarship Fund
Purpose: To assist CHOICES students with demonstrated financial need to defray costs of tuition, materials, and/or supplies related to academic courses.
Value: Varies.
Number of Awards: Varies.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must demonstrate need and be enrolled in the CHOICES program and attending classes during the semester for which the award is applicable. Award will only be made to defray costs of tuition, materials, and/or supplies related to academic courses. Awards will be made available to students who have not already been awarded Pell grants or other forms of financial assistance.

Commercial Screen Supply Award
Purpose: To award students for technical excellence.
Value: $100 gift certificates for art supplies.
Number of Awards: 2.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must be enrolled in the Visual Arts program.
Application: No application is required. The Visual Arts department will select eligible candidates.
Darleen Ferzoco Scholarship
Purpose: Awarded to a student enrolled in the LATCH program who has a minimum 3.4 GPA and demonstrates financial need.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must have a minimum 3.4 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
Application: No application is required. Latch department will select eligible candidates.
David and Anne Smith Book Award
Purpose: To enable financially needy students to purchase textbooks for courses in substance abuse, substance abuse counseling, addiction, and other related topics determined by donor.
Value: Varies.
Number of Awards: Varies.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must demonstrate financial need and agree to return texts for use by future recipients.
Application: No application is required. Candidates selected by Director of Financial Aid, with recipient(s) selected by donor/designee.
David B. and Pauline Cohen Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To assist students who demonstrate financial need (as defined in the Federal Needs Analysis formula) to pay their tuition and fees.
Value: An amount not to exceed $500.
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must demonstrate financial need and a willingness and motivation to complete coursework. Recipients need not be enrolled in a degree or certificate program; funds may be used for courses.
Application: No application is required. Recipient selected by President or his/her designee.
The Dawn Butler Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To aid non-traditional female students to continue their education at Massasoit.
Value: $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be a female student, 35 years or older and preferably attending the Canton Campus, but open to all. Student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must write an essay on “What inspires me to learn” (500 words). Debbie Pincolini Baroni Scholarship
Purpose: Awarded to a deserving Office Administration student who has completed his/her freshman year.

Desiree Yess Scholarship
Purpose: Awarded to an entering female freshman who has demonstrated academic and athletic ability. She must also be considered a leader and an asset to her community.

Eligibility Criteria: The recipient of this award must be a full-time student, must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and must maintain varsity status.
Dorothy D. Gibbs Scholarship Fund
Purpose: To encourage and provide financial assistance to academically outstanding students at Massasoit Community College who intend to enroll in baccalaureate degree programs at highly selective colleges and universities.
Value: Varies
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be a graduate from an associate degree program at Massasoit Community College with a minimum 3.5 cumulative QPA who has been admitted to a baccalaureate degree program at a highly selective college or university. Recipient must remain in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need (as determined by the baccalaureate degree-granting institution) while receiving funds. The duration of financial assistance after transferring from Massasoit Community College to a baccalaureate degree-granting program will be no more than four semesters.
Application: No application is required. Candidates are selected.
Faye Berzon Nursing Scholarship
Purpose: Awarded to encourage and provide financial assistance to an outstanding Nursing student at Massasoit Community College.
Value: $250

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be completing the first year of the Nursing program at Massasoit and must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA at the completion of the first semester. Applicant must have at least 18 credits of courses applicable only to the Nursing program and taken at Massasoit. Applicant must have outstanding clinical nursing skills.
Application: Deadline is April 1; obtain in Nursing Department.

Foster/Price/Hughes Fund
Purpose: Income earned by this fund will be used for purposes which permit a student to continue his or her education and are not limited to direct school expenses.

Application: No application is required. The Director of Financial Aid will select recipients.
Fred Foy Radio Student of Year
Purpose: Award in amount of $200 is granted each year to a student member of the Radio Club.

Application: No application is required. Selection of recipient determined by the Director of the Radio Club.
Helen B. Bulman Award
Purpose: Presented annually by the South Shore Dental Society to a graduating dental assistant.
Value: Engraved plaque and a check for $100

Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be a graduating dental assistant at Massasoit Community College who has the highest GPA in the Dental Assisting Program.
Application: No application is required. Dental Assisting Department will select recipient based on GPA.
Howard J. Schwendler Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To recognize a business student with greatest potential

Hughes Book Award
Purpose: To provide a Massasoit student who exhibits financial need (as determined by the Federal Needs Analysis formula) with money to purchase books.
Value: Amount not to exceed $200

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be enrolled at Massasoit Community College. Student must demonstrate financial need and therefore must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
Application: Letter of request required. Financial Aid Director will select eligible candidates based on financial need.
Instrument Society of America: Boston Section Award
Purpose: Awarded to a student enrolled at Massasoit Community College.
Value: $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be enrolled at Massasoit Community College, be in good academic standing, and have a strong interest and performance in the process controls area.
Application: No application is required. Faculty of the Electro-Mechanical Technology Department will select eligible candidates.
James MacDonald Scholarship
Purpose: Granted each year to a full-time, day student at Massasoit Community College.
Value: $250
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must demonstrate financial need (according to College guidelines) and maintain at least a “C” average. Preference should be given to a graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School and one who is interested in playing baseball/softball at the College.

John Chase Massasoit Theater Company Scholarship
Purpose: To acknowledge Massasoit students who have contributed to the work of the Massasoit Theater Company in administration or behind the scenes.
Value: Amount not to exceed $300 each.
Number of Awards: Varies
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be returning to Massasoit in the subsequent fall semester. Must have demonstrated commitment to the work of the Massasoit Theater Company productions either in administration or working behind the scenes.
Application: Letter of request required. Massasoit students will be encouraged to apply via announcements available in the Massasoit Theater Company office and the College library.
Latch Recognition Award
Purpose: To recognize Latch students for community service efforts.
Value: $100
Number of Awards: Up to 3
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be enrolled in the Latch Program, demonstrate financial need, and be caring and helpful to their fellow students.
Application: No application is required. Latch staff nominate students for the recognition award.
Lifting the Veil of Silence - Alexander Pecevich Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To provide financial support in the amount of $500 over the next three years towards the education of a student at Massasoit Community College who demonstrates a particular interest in Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.
Value: $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must have strong clinical (or professional) skills and demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to dementia patient’s needs and the needs of their family and professional caregivers. Preference will be given to current or past dementia caregivers. Preference will be give to Allied Health Students majoring in Nursing or Social Services and students with a 2.5 GPA or higher. While there is no financial need criteria, the Director of Financial Aid will advise the committee on those within the pool of candidates that have the greatest need, if known.
Application: College employees may recommend students by March 1. Recommended students will be invited to apply by mid-March.
Lost Coin Women’s Fund
Purpose: To support academic opportunities for low-income women by providing funds to assist in undergraduate studies or training programs.
Value: $1000.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be a woman with demonstrated financial need.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler Scholarship
Purpose: To provide scholarships to worthy and qualified students in need of financial assistance at Massasoit Community College.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must be matriculated and enrolled, full- or part-time, in either Day or Continuing Education courses at Massasoit Community College; must have completed at least one semester of matriculated course work at Massasoit with a GPA in “good academic standing” (as defined in the College catalog); must be either a U.S. citizen or resident alien (NOT in U.S. on a student visa); must demonstrate College and community involvement.
Application: Deadline is April 30.

Mary Baker Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To provide one semester of tuition, fees and books (not to exceed $1,000) at Massasoit Community College to a full-time student of color (preferably African-American) from the City of Brockton. This scholarship also seeks to recognize those students who are actively involved in their communities providing community service as volunteers.
Value: Not to exceed $1000
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must have be a person of color (preferably African-American, a resident of the City of Brockton, and a student who has 24 credits at Massasoit and is making satisfactory academic progress. Applicant must also be involved in performing community service in a viable, consistent and committed capacity.
Application: Deadline is April 10.

Massachusetts Society of Radiologic Technology, Cape Cod Chapter
Purpose: To support academic opportunities for a radiology sophomore and freshman student by providing financial assistance.
Value: $500 each.
Number of Awards: 2
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be an enrolled student in the Radiology Program at Massasoit and a student member of the MSRT organization.
Application: Deadline is April 15. Program Director will distribute application materials to all radiology students in early March.
Massasoit Alumni Association
Purpose: To provide support and encouragement in furthering the educational needs, intellectual stimulation, and progressive environment for students who would not otherwise be able to continue their studies at Massasoit Community College or pursue a B.A./B.S. after graduation.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be enrolled full- or part-time in either the day school or evening, have completed 15 degree credit hours or college course work at Massasoit Community College, and be in good academic standing, maintaining a minimum 2.5 QPA. Applicant will be highly considered based on the following: economic need; academic abilities; perseverance as evidenced in the personal statement; commitment to, and involvement in, Massasoit Community College activities and events.

Massasoit Community College Faculty Scholar Awards
Purpose: Each academic division will select a deserving student to receive the award at commencement.
Value: $1,500
Number of Awards: 6
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must have a minimum 3.75 QPA, be eligible for graduation in the spring, and be planning to transfer to a four-year institution.
Application: Eligible students will be invited to apply.
Massasoit Community College Honors Scholarship
Purpose: To provide students enrolled in an Associate Degree program with an Honors Program Option of the Liberal Arts Transfer, Liberal Arts Studies, Business Administration Transfer, and Business Administration, and other appropriate program options a $100 scholarship to acknowledge their high academic ability.
Value: $100

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must have a high cumulative average, must be recommended for the Honors Program by a faculty member, and must receive a grade of B+ or better in English Composition I.
Application: Eligible students will be invited to apply.
Massasoit Math Team Awards
Purpose: To recognize students who participated in the Math Team Competition sponsored by the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year College Student Mathematics League.

Eligibility Criteria: Participation on the Massasoit Math Team.
Application: No application is required. Recipients are chosen by the Faculty moderator of the competition and based on contribution to the team score in each round of testing.
Outstanding Student Senator Award
Purpose: To recognize the outstanding contributions of a Student Senator.
Value: This award has no monetary value.
Number of Awards: Varies
Eligibility Criteria: Recipient must be a graduating student or a member of the Student Senate for a minimum of two (2) years who has demonstrated extraordinary service to the college and community through community work, has represented the college at various events, and has exhibited leadership and advocated for the general student body.
Application: No application is required. Student Senate makes up the selection committee.
The Honorable Paul Murphy Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student who demonstrates financial need (as defined in the Federal Needs Analysis Formula) to pay tuition and fees.
Value: $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must demonstrate financial need and a willingness and motivation to complete their coursework. Applicants need not be enrolled in a degree or certificate program.
Application: No application is required. The President or his/her designee will select eligible students through an interview process.
Peg Lynch Award
Purpose: Awarded to one or more graduating females who have excelled in Theatre, Television, or Radio Production.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be a female Massasoit student(s) who will be graduating and transferring to a college or university, enrolling in one of the three fields listed above.
Application: Deadline is May 7. Application and video monologue required.

Peter McCauley Scholarship
Purpose: Awarded for athletic ability under the policies governing scholarships of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be considered to be a “good citizen” and an asset to his or her community. Candidate must be a full-time student with a minimum 2.0 GPA who must maintain varsity status.

Presidential Inaugural Fund
Purpose: To assist students who demonstrate financial need (as defined in the Federal Needs Analysis formula) to pay for books.
Value: Amount not to exceed the interest earned by the Fund.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must demonstrate financial need and a willingness and motivation to complete their coursework. Candidates need not be enrolled in a degree or certificate program.
Application: No application is required. Director of Financial Aid will select eligible candidates.
Radiology Technology Award
Purpose: To award students for academic excellence and performance.
Value: $200
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must be enrolled in the Radiology Technology program at Massasoit and demonstrate academic excellence and performance.
Application: No application is required. Faculty of Radiology Technology department selects eligible candidates.
Second Chance Scholarship
Purpose: To assist students who demonstrate financial need (as defined in the Federal Needs Analysis formula), but do not qualify for state or federal student financial aid programs due to unsatisfactory academic progress. This scholarship will assist students who have overcome adversity or hardship in their lives to graduate from Massasoit Community College.
Value: Amount not to exceed tuition and fees.
Number of Awards: Varies.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate need and submit written appeal of the decision denying them state and federal financial aid programs.
Application: No application is required. The Financial Aid Director will review and select applicants based on financial need and the merits of their appeal.
The John & Julia Sheehan Scholarship
Purpose: To assist students who demonstrate financial need (as defined in the Federal Needs Analysis formula) to pay their tuition and fees.
Value: An amount not to exceed $500.
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must demonstrate financial need and a willingness and motivation to complete coursework. Recipients need not be enrolled in a degree or certificate program; funds will be used to pay for courses.
Application: No application is required. Recipient is selected by the President and his/her designee.
Kim Gomes Television Student of the Year
Purpose: To acknowledge a student who has contributed the most to video production at Massasoit Community College.
Value: Amount not to exceed $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must demonstrate financial need and also demonstrate the most commitment to the work of the TV studio/video production.
Application: No application is required. Recipient is nominated and selected for this award by the Director of Radio, TV, and Media Services, Assistant Director of Radio & TV, and Production Manager.
Theresa Smith Memorial Book Award
Purpose: To recognize the continual efforts and perseverance of students with physical disabilities in the LATCH program.
Value: A Book Award, Bartlett’s Book of Quotations, will be awarded annually at Honors Convocation.
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be a LATCH student or former LATCH student who has some sort of physical disability causing hardship to continuing in school. Current LATCH students will be considered; former LATCH students who have continued into a new program of study must be making satisfactory academic progress. Candidate should demonstrate kindness to other students and faculty. Candidate can be enrolled in one class, two classes, three classes, or full time.
Application: No application is required. LATCH faculty will select eligible students.
Victor Fezio Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To encourage and support an academically outstanding student in Law Enforcement who intends to enroll in a baccalaureate degree program in Law Enforcement.

Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Applicant must be a graduate of the Law Enforcement program at Massasoit with a minimum 3.3 cumulative QPA who has been admitted to a baccalaureate degree program in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice. The applicant must also be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need as determined by the baccalaureate degree-granting institution.

Wayne Pickett Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To encourage and provide financial assistance to a student residing in Braintree and attending Massasoit.
Value: $500
Number of Awards: 1
Eligibility Criteria: Candidate must be completing his or her first year of school and be returning to Massasoit in the next semester, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, must be working part-time, and demonstrate financial need (determined by the Director of Financial Aid). Candidate should also be a graduate of Braintree High School and resident of Braintree while attending Massasoit.
Application: No application is required. Director of Financial Aid selects eligible students.
Winkler Clinical Awards top

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates are either the most proficient in clinical training or the most improved clinical student of the graduating dental assistant class as determined by department faculty.
Application: No application required. Dental assistant faculty select award recipients.
