Liberal Arts Studies - Instructional Paraprofessional Option

The Associate Degree program is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements for Instructional Paraprofessionals in classrooms serving the needs of children from ages 4 to 14. Specific goals of the degree program are:
  • To provide instructional paraprofessionals with the opportunity to meet new requirements for their job description as mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965
  • To meet the needs of the communities and paraprofessionals in the Massasoit Community College service area.
  • To enable learners to attain an Associate in Science degree with program focus on the provision of learning opportunities that address the specific needs of the instructional paraprofessional Associate Degree.
  • To prepare students for transfer to Baccalaureate Degree programs.

* If one tests out of English Composition I, then any Speech, Literature, Journalism, or Foreign Language course may be substituted.
** Must be a two-course sequence, e.g. English Literature I (ENGL201) and English Literature II (ENGL202)
(Please note: Dramatic Literature I (ENGL217 and Dramatic Literature II (ENGL218) may not be used as the literature sequence.)

Computer keyboarding competency is required for graduation. This may be fulfilled by taking the computer keyboard workshop or by passing the competency test.

This program awards the AS Degree upon completion of 20 courses and a minimum of 60 credits

Participation in the paraprofessional program will require prior completion of placement testing. Students may call the Student Assessment Office at 508-588-9100 extensions 1991 or 1992 to make an appointment for assessment on scheduled testing dates.
