Elementary Education
The Associate in Science Degree, Liberal Arts Studies-Elementary Education Option, is a two year degree program designed to prepare students to complete the initial two years of teacher training. Successful completion of the program will allow students to enter a state college or university as a junior having completed requirements of the Elementary Education Transfer Compact. In order to become an elementary school teacher, the student must complete the associate’s degree program, transfer to a four-year degree granting institution and complete work to attain at least a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate. The Elementary Education program at Massasoit Community College has been designed to allow transition from the community college to Bridgewater State College, UMass Dartmouth, or any other state college or university cooperating in the transfer compact. The program may also be transferable to private colleges in the Massasoit Community College geographic area. Students should be aware that they must attain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 for successful transfer.

  • Have and demonstrate skills in the Liberal Arts
  • Be culturally responsive and effective educational pre-practitioners
  • Meet published requirements for entrance into state college or university elementary educations programs at the junior level
Suggested Course Sequence
The Elementary Education Associate’s Degree is an attractive option for students who wish to achieve a high-quality, moderate cost preparatory degree. Instructional paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, teacher’s aides, entry-level college students and mature returning or career-change students who wish to become elementary education practitioners will all benefit from this program. The course structure addresses some of the topics in the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Students should plan to take the Communication and Literacy section of the MTEL shortly after completing English Composition II (ENGL 102) which may be required for entry into a Bachelor’s degree program. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the department chair during their first year of study to plan course sequences that avoid prerequisite conflicts.

The suggested course sequence for the program is:
