The Education Department at Massasoit Community College houses both In-House Certificate and Associate Degree granting programs.
Students who wish to become teachers of young children can now begin their undergraduate work in the Elementary Education Program at Massasoit Community College. The Liberal Arts Studies- Elementary Education option is designed to allow students the opportunity to obtain an Associate in Science degree which meets the requirements of the Elementary Education Transfer Compact of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. Students may then transfer to participating Massachusetts State Colleges or Universities as Elementary Education majors to continue preparation for classroom teaching. The Elementary Education page provides more information about the program and major.
Instructional Paraprofessionals, also known as teaching assistants and teacher aides, have the opportunity to train for qualification through the Certificate Program or the Liberal Arts Studies- Instructional Paraprofessional Option degree program. Both of the offered programs aspire to assist students who wish to improve their skills or prepare for a position as a teaching assistant.
Any person currently employed as an Instructional Paraprofessional and paid with Title I funds must meet the qualification standards set by the Federal government in No Child Left Behind legislation by January 8, 2006. Both the Certificate and degree programs follow the guidelines set by the Massachusetts Department of Education to assist students in this matter.
Course descriptions for these Instructional Paraprofessional program-specific courses can be found here: http://www.massasoit.mass.edu/acad/crse_desc_ser.cfm
The emphasis of this A.S. program is to provide the student with sufficient knowledge and skills to maintain employment upon graduation and is not specifically oriented towards transfer into a teacher training program. However, several courses may transfer to baccalaureate degree granting institutions. Interested students should seek additional information from the Education Department.
The department also embraces the position of the disability service providers at the college. “Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in the classroom are encouraged to contact the Learning Disability Coordinator, Andrea Henry , at x1805, or Disability Counselor, Stan Oliver, at x1464, as soon as possible, in order to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.
