Policies Regarding the Child Care Education Program

Policy on Failures

The passing grade in Development in Early Childhood, Practicum I and II, and Seminar I and II is a "C" or better. All prerequisites and corequisites must be met for each Child Care course. A grade of "C" or better in Development in Early Childhood is a prerequisite for Early Childhood Curriculum: A Multi-cultural Perspective, Practicum I in Child Care and Seminar I in Child Care. (Effective Fall 1994) grades of "B-" or better in Practicum I in Child Care, and Seminar I in Child Care, are prerequisites for Practicum II in Child Care Management and Seminar II in Child Care Management.

Students who fail the same course twice or fail Child Care courses totaling six (6) credits or more cannot continue in the Child Care Program, except for extenuating circumstances.

Students who fail will be seen by an instructor and receive faculty/department recommendations regarding career goals. If they wish to continue at the College and take other courses they must change their program through the Counseling Office. All applications for readmission to the Child Care Education Program are on a space available basis.

Any time students are judged by the instructor to be a danger to themselves, children, other students or professionals while in the practicum, that instructor will temporarily terminate the student's practicum experience, pending careful review by the appropriate team with the Department Chairperson. Further action, up to and including dismissal from the Child Care Program, will be determined by the course team in consultation with the Department and Assistant Dean. Students will have the right to appeal the decision through the Department and/or Assistant Dean. The student grievance procedure is also available as an avenue of appeal.

Policy on Attendance
Students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled classes and practicum sessions. If the student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain the material presented. Failure to attend more than fifty percent of regularly scheduled classes will result in a Failure (F) for the course. More than three unexcused absences will impact the grade received for the course. Each course will address specific attendance policies on the syllabus.

Policy on Incompletes
If a student receives a grade of Incomplete (I) for Development in Early Childhood, that grade must be completed with a "C" or better before that student can advance into Early Childhood Curriculum: A Multi-Cultural Perspective, Practicum I in Child Care, and Seminar I in Child Care. If a student receives a grade of Incomplete (I) in Practicum I in Child Care, and/or Seminar I in Child Care that grade must be completed with a grade of "B-" or better before that student can advance into Practicum II in Child Care Management, and/or Seminar II in Child Care Management. One hundred fifty practicum hours must be completed, verified and submitted no later than the last scheduled day of classes. A grade of Incomplete (I) will be given for either Practicum or Seminar at the discretion of the instructor if a majority of the course work is complete.


Make-Up Policy for Practicums
One hundred fifty practicum hours must be completed within the semester. Exceptions to this policy will be at the discretion of the instructor.

Practicum I in Child Care Education Make-up Policy
Hours in Practicum I in Child Care may be completed until the end of May, providing all course work is complete.

Practicum II in Child Care Management Make-up Policy
Students can complete Practicum II in Child Care Management hours in the following semester, providing all other course work is completed.
