Shaw’s Supermarket's Inc., of West Bridgewater has earned the naming rights for the soon to be built modern language
laboratory at the Brockton campus of Massasoit Community College.
At a festive 40th Anniversary celebration attended by over 250 people at the Massasoit Conference Center, Cindy
Garnett, Vice President of Human Resources for Shaw’s presented a $50,000 check to Massasoit President Charles Wall
and Foundation Chairman Edward Matta that initiates the construction of the Shaw’s Modern Language Laboratory.
Ms. Garnett spoke of Shaw’s commitment to help people in the Metro South Community seeking to improve
their lives through education.
“Massasoit people are Shaw’s kind of people,” said Garnett, “hardworking, smart and constantly looking for ways to
improve their lives.”
President Wall lauded the gift as the largest monetary gift in the 40 year history of the college, noting it was a true
example of Shaw’s long record of outstanding corporate citizenship.
“Shaw’s support of Massasoit represents the type of business and education partnership that should serve as a model
for the Commonwealth. Together we will not only improve the lives of our students but also upgrade their communication
skills in an ever increasingly multi-lingual work environment.”
Paula Mather, Chair of the Massasoit Community College Board of Trustees noted the willingness of Shaw’s “to help our
students and setting an example that other business leaders will follow.”
When completed, the Shaw’s Modern Language Laboratory will house 35 student work stations.
Instructors, using a master console, will be able to offer interactive listening and speaking opportunities in 10 languages
currently being taught at the college.
Highlight of the 40th Anniversary celebration at Massasoit Community College was the acceptance of a $50,000
