Is a Distance Learning Course Right for You?
Other Distance Learning Self-Assessments
Distance learning courses can be fun, exciting, challenging, convenient, and enriching. However, distance learning courses are not for everyone. Taking a distance course requires the same commitment of time, study, and effort as a face-to-face course plus a high degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and independence. To determine if you will feel comfortable in this learning environment, please take about five minutes to complete this easy, fun quiz.
I have (or am willing to obtain) access to a computer and an Internet connection at home.
I feel that high quality learning can take place without having face-to-face interaction.
The part of education I enjoy the most is the discovery of new information and ideas.
I can dedicate 4 to 6 hours a week (anytime during the day or night) to participate in the learning process.
I am not a self-motivated or self-disciplined person.
Prioritizing tasks -- and then accomplishing them before their deadlines -- is one of my strong points. I am not a procrastinator.
I am comfortable communicating my ideas in writing.
I feel comfortable reading/viewing material from various sources (textbooks, articles, Websites) and integrating it on my own.
Listening to discussions is not helpful to me.
I believe in the value of introducing critical thinking into the learning process.
I am comfortable working independently and do not feel the need for constant attention and direction from the instructor.
I think increased learning will take place through sharing work, life, and educational experiences as part of the learning process.
I am comfortable with sending email, browsing websites, and using new technologies.
I have a high need to take a distance learning course now -- to earn a degree or certificate, for a promotion, or for a new job.
My lifestyle (family, work, or personal schedule) makes it difficult for you to attend courses during the day.
I find it difficult to ask an instructor for help when I have trouble understanding a topic and need clarification.
